If you’re at home with the kids wondering how you’ll make every day fun and exciting, you’re not alone. Summer can seem overwhelming, but don’t let that stop you from making great memories with your kids. We’ve got some great FRESH ideas for a summer you’ll never forget.
Blow a Bubble
Summertime is great for blowing bubbles, especially if you make your own! Chances are you’ve got everything you need for hours of fun. Here’s a great recipe:
4 cups water
1 cup dish soap (we had Palmolive, but I’ve seen Ajax, Joy and Dawn used.)
1/4 cup corn syrupcontainer for mixing and dipping
bubble wands or other bubble-making devices (cookie cutters work great!)
Pour and mix all of the ingredients into a bowl or jug. If you’re using a jug, a funnel is great for pouring. Let the solution settle a little, then pour it into a flat container. Now, it’s time to make great bubbles! Kids will enjoy making bubbles from all different shapes and sizes.
Sculpt a Shape! Making sculptures from homemade playdough is a creative summer activity. You probably have everything you need to make a batch of dough. Here’s the recipe!
1/4 cup salt
1 cup flour
1/4 cup water*
Have your child mix the flour and salt in a bowl, then add water. Knead and squeeze the dough to make a clay consistency. You may need to add more water.
*If you want to add color but don’t use artificial dyes, try using our FRESH-pressed juices from the produce department in place of the water. We have some great options like carrot, watermelon and green vegetable. The sky’s the limit!
Bake a Cookie
No-bake cookies are a great way to involve kids in the kitchen. Since no heat is required, they can do just about everything (with supervision, of course!). Bring your child to the FRESH bulk section to choose their very favorite cookie ingredients, but be warned: a stop by the gelato bar might be necessary. Here’s the recipe:
1 cup nut butter of choice (we like cashew, almond or peanut)
1/4 cup dried fruit
1/4 cup oats
2 Tbsp honey or agave nectar
dash of salt
Place all ingredients in a bowl. Using your hands, mix everything together. Don’t be afraid to make a mess — messy cookies taste better anyway! After mixing, taste your creation to make sure everything is good. Roll into balls. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate!
No matter what your summer looks like, make sure you make great FRESH memories with the kids in your life. Chances are you’ve got the ingredients for a fun summer right in your own pantry.
