A FRESH Point of View: Be cool, go back to school!

Established in 1984, Melissa’s/World Variety Produce, Inc. is currently the largest distributor of specialty produce in the United States. With over 1000 items available at any given time, Melissa’s imports and distributes exotic fresh fruits and vegetables from around the globe.

This week, one of their top experts, Richard Hiltz, will be here at FRESH to teach you a thing or two about the FRESH Produce department!

What: FRESH Produce University
When: Thursday July 12 from 4-6pm, Friday July 13 from 4-6pm, Saturday July 14 from 2-4pm
Where: Produce Department

Thursday’s display theme will be Potatoes & Onions. Richard will talk about some of these items including Dutch Yellow Potatoes, Ruby Gold Potatoes, Pee Wee Potatoes, Purple Potatoes, Yamo Imu, Okinawa Sweet Potatoes, Boiler Onions, Pearl Onions, Shallots and Torpedo Onions. The featured recipe will be Melissa’s Dutch Yellow Potatoes cooked in olive oil with garlic and ginger and seasoned with Organic Grinder Garlic & Herb and Sea Salt.

Friday’s theme will be exotic summer fruits. Richard will talk about some of these items including Melons, Black Velvet Apricots, Peach Pie Peaches, Mango Nectarines, Lychees, Young Coconuts and more! Friday’s featured sampling item will be a cut melon variety. The featured variety will be a “pick of the week” depending on best flavor that week. Each week Melissa’s team cuts, tastes, and brixes all the melon varieties with an instrument that measures the sweetness called a “Refractometer”.
The variety with the highest brix reading will be cut for sampling…exciting! Likely one of these varieties will be chosen: Canary, Casaba, Crenshaw, Galia, Gaya, Hami, Gold or Orange Honeydew, Persian, Santa Claus or Sharlyn.

Saturday’s theme will be Summer Salads & related veggies. Richard will talk about some of these items including Melissa’s line of steamed veggies from France, Melissa’s Couscous mix and all sorts of fresh ingredients. Saturday’s featured recipe will be fresh salad. Ingredients to include Organic Living Butter Lettuce Green & Red, Heirloom Tomatoes, Radicchio, Organic Edamame Shelled, 6 Bean Medley, Baby Peeled Beets, Steamed Lentils, Organic Dried Cranberries, Italian Pine Nuts and Brookshire’s own delicious salad dressing.

Themed brochures with recipes will be available each day.
