Well and Good: To Snack or Not to Snack – That is the Question.

Americans spend $27 billion every year… on snacks.  As our lives get busier, snacks become more popular, in some cases serving as a main source of calories throughout the day.

Here’s the real question: what has $27 billion gotten us? In most cases, it’s been sugar. And not just any sugar: refined sugar, devoid of any nutritional value. In soda, cookies, cake, brownies… and on and on.  While our billion-dollar sugar high lasts for awhile, the pending crash is not worth the sacrifice.

With a little careful planning, snacking can be a positive. Lets take a look at a couple popular snacks and their made-over counterparts.

French Fries. One medium order of french fries from your local fast food drive-thru has a whopping 19 grams of fat… including saturated and even trans fat, and 370 calories. While this isn’t a bad choice once in a while, choosing this snack every day will pack on the pounds… and cause mid-day energy levels to take a nose-dive.

Instead, choose this: a handful of walnuts from our bulk department paired with a dried fruit like blueberries or cherries will keep you fuller longer.

Quick tip: Walnuts are an excellent source of all-important Omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight inflammation that can lead to sickness like heart disease. It’s good for your brain, eyes and skin too!

Do you crave sweet snacks? The typical American brownie contains 376 calories and 22 grams of fat. Over half the calories come from fat.

Chocolate cravings can be hard to manage, so here’s a quick tip: dark chocolate contains anti-oxidants that are great (in moderation!) for heart health.

Here at FRESH, we have some great options for that chocolate craving. Four or five of our dark chocolate almonds or cocoa-dusted dark chocolate almonds will probably do the trick. And here, you have the added bonus of almonds for protein and fiber. Five dark chocolate almonds contain 110 calories and 8 grams of fat.

This may seem like a lot to take in, but putting in a little time on a Saturday (or your favorite Fresh shopping day) will actually save time and money during the week. When you plan for the day’s snacks, you’re less likely to spend extra money (and calories!) on take out and candy from the oh-so-convenient vending machine.

After awhile, you’ll become a snack-making genius… it’ll take no time at all!

We’d love to help you make a snacking plan! Come see us in the bulk department and we will hook you up with plenty of snacking options, customized for your busy lifestyle.
