What does it feel like to be hungry? Not just that subtle nudge that propels to the vending machine mid- afternoon. I mean really hungry, the kind of hungry that keeps you up at night. In the land of plenty, there are some who go without, even here in East Texas.
There is no doubt that I love food. I have been very intentional about surrounding myself with food, foodies, chefs and the like. Therefore, the thought of not having access to fresh, nutrient rich delicious food is hard to comprehend. Thank goodness for East Texas Food Bank.
They are here to help our friends and neighbors day in and day out. In East Texas there are many at risk of hunger, 1 in 4 children, 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 7 seniors. The East Texas Food Bank distributed over 18 million pounds of food each year to over 200 partner agencies in 26 East Texas counties. Their vision is for a hunger‐free East Texas and mission is to reduce hunger by providing food, support and education to those in need with passion and efficiency. Their purpose is to ensure that no one in East Texas is forced to go without food.
I had an eye opening opportunity to work at East Food Bank before I came to FRESH. I was the Volunteer Coordinator and that experience has forever changed the way I think about really being hungry. I met many individuals that look just like you or me needing help to make ends meet. It fills my heart with joy to have an event here at FRESH in June that will support the Food Bank’s efforts.
On June 2nd we will have our annual Steak Cookoff. FRESH by Brookshire’s is supporting the East Texas Food Bank by honoring an established Texas tradition; grilling. We will take this time for some friendly competition; good vittles and fun times while giving back to our community. Tickets are $18.99 and will be sold that are good for one chef prepared steak dinner including sides plus a commemorative knife with all proceeds from the tickets going to the East Texas Food Bank.
A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at FRESH, the Brookshire’s locations on Rice Road, the East Loop and in Bergfeld center. You will also be able to purchase pre-packaged food bags at FRESH to donate to the Food Bank.
Raise your forks in support of the Food Bank on June 2nd. Hope to see you there!
