With the beauty of the Spring flowers comes a time of the year many of us dread, allergy season.
Spring allergies are usually associated with pollen. Many of our East Texas trees and flowers can cause as much misery as beauty. So what can you do to help yourself?
Spring is in the air, so in the house is the last place you want to be. So here are a few helpful hints to reduce exposure.
- Try to enjoy the great outdoors in the late afternoon or evening when pollen counts are lower.
- Keep grass cut short.
- Choose plants that rely on cross-pollination for your yard, so there is not as much pollen blowing in the wind.
- Wear a mask and glasses to lessen exposure to pollen, especially if you are mowing the yard.
- Take a shower and change clothes when you come in to wash the pollen from your hair, skin, and clothes.
Sometimes no matter how hard you try you will still have watery eyes and a runny nose, what now?
Over the counter antihistamines can help tremendously with your runny nose and itchy eyes, but do not “cure” allergies. There are short and long acting antihistamines. The long-acting do not have to be taken as often, but you have to wait longer for relief. Nasal decongestants can also relieve sinus pressure that has built up from congestion. There are also a wide variety of nasal sprays and washes to ease nasal symptoms.
With so many options it may be hard to figure out what will be best for you. Come by FRESH Pharmacy and ask one of our pharmacists to see which product is safe for you.
