A FRESH Point of View: Harvesting the Urban Forest

A great thing about FRESH and Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) as a whole is our commitment to our community and to the environment.  As the result of this commitment, FRESH was recently awarded LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.  FRESH is the first grocery store in East Texas to be LEED certified.

Aside from the more visible initiatives that BGC undertakes, there are other amazing “behind the scenes” programs that also make a huge impact.  Take for example, BGC‘s partnership with Pratt Industries, the world’s largest privately owned paper and packaging company.

Pratt operates three high-tech 100% recycled paper mills – one in Conyers, Georgia, one on Staten Island, NY  (the main contractor for the New Your Department of Sanitation’s residential recycling program) and one in Shreveport, Louisiana.  They opened the Shreveport mill in February 2009 which is the most modern, cost efficient and environmentally sound mill in the country.

Pratt recycles all of BGC’s cardboard and paper products from all facilities including retail stores through its plant in Shreveport.   In February of 2012, BGC sent 1,516 tons of cardboard and paper to Pratt!  We are proud of statistics such as this that are evidence that our company is doing its part to be positive environmental stewards.

Pratt has calculated “green” savings for every ton of recycled paper that is used in their mills. One ton of Recycled Paper Saves:

  • 17 Trees
  • 3.3 Cubic Yards of Landfill
  • 7000 Gallons of Water
  • 4000 kWhrs of electricity
  • 1 Ton of CO2e

Pratt will be at FRESH for our Earth Day celebration on April 21st from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Stop by and learn more about the dramatic impact they are making on our environment.
