It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas around here. Almost every day, we’ve been getting in new holiday specialties. If you have a sweet tooth, here are three new arrivals you should try:
Bovetti chocolates: Artisan French chocolate, created by an Italian – so it’s delicious AND stylish. These bars, in dark and milk chocolate, are subtly decorated with images of snowflakes or Christmas trees. My favorite is the smooth dark chocolate bar – 73 percent cacao – with crunchy sugar crystals, in the shape of snowflakes. These are ideal stocking stuffers, or a little holiday treat to parcel out to yourself one square at a time.
The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg, peanuts and candies: Virginia peanuts are bigger, crunchier, and to many people, tastier than other varieties. And this candy and nut purveyor, which started in Colonial Williamsburg about 40 years ago, sells only the best and biggest Virginia peanuts. At FRESH, you can buy tins of roasted, lightly salted peanuts, or one of their specialties, like old-fashioned peanut crunch, fresh peanuts crystallized in a light, crispy sugar-syrup. The most festive, and a great gift idea, is the mixture of roasted peanuts with chocolate-covered dried cranberries.
Nordic Sweets: These little bags of candies are imported from Scandinavian countries, and represent traditional sweets enjoyed in Europe during the holidays. We have several varieties, including sour starfish and sugar-dusted raspberry jellies, but my favorites are the “mintees” – minted chocolate in a pastel candy shell, like a round, mint M&M.
