FRESH and Festive: A Hot Lineup

It’s the first weekend of our Some Like it Hot festival, and we hope you’ll come early, stay late, and take in as much of the hotness as you can handle. Highlights for this weekend (and beyond):

Jalapeño tips: The Jalapeño is the most basic chile pepper in Tex-Mex cuisine, but it’s very versatile. Did you know Jalapeños can add heat and depth of flavor not just to savory dishes, but desserts and even drinks? (If you haven’t tried our Jalapeño margarita mix, available at the fresh juice counter in Produce, you must!) Come hang out and sample as our Freshologists cook with Jalapeños! FRESH Taste Kitchen, 12 -3 p.m TODAY!

Latin Jazz: Spice it up with some Latin rhythms from Senor Gringos, Tyler’s own Latin jazz band. Made up of a core group of well-known East Texas musicians, including Tony Marsh, Kevin Ewalt and John Morrow, the jazz band plays some originals, plus covers of songs by artists like Marc Antoine, Oscar Lopez and Ottmar Liebert. “It’s a laid-back sound, but it really grooves,” says band leader Elbert Wright. Sounds good to us. Hear for yourselves tonight on the Back Patio from 6-9pm.

Chefs Montez and Brady Mix It Up: Chef Carlos Montez heads up the kitchen at one of Tyler’s most acclaimed, and most delicious, restaurants, Villa Montez, where his signature dishes include his Latin-inspired spring rolls, tequila-lime chicken, tenderloin with roasted poblanos and guajillochile sauce, and his creative takes on ceviche. And Chef Michael Brady, a Louisiana transplant, is the chef de cuisine at FRESH; you may have met him during one of his popular weekend cooking events. So we can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with together when they take over the demo kitchen at FRESH for a little culinary mashup. FRESH Taste Kitchen, 12-3pm, Saturday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 13

Cool jazz: Tyler’s own Off Season Jazz takes over the Back Patio from 6-9pm Saturday, Aug. 6. Their repertoire includes many classics, including Summertime, My Funny Valentine, Satin Doll and Ain’t No Sunshine; come hear what makes it into their FRESH set list.

More chile demos: Next week, we’ll continue our series of demos and sampling sessions featuring dried and fresh chiles. All are in our FRESH Taste Kitchen.
