I’m kind of an ingredient snob. I always read labels, and I’m always impressed with any food that is made not just with fresh ingredients, but with only a few of them. To me, if you can make a handful of ingredients taste great, you’re doing something special.
That’s one of the things I love about Udi’s Artisan Granola. This Colorado company – an outgrowth of a Denver bakery I loved when I lived there – makes super-healthy, super-delicious granola using just the pure essentials. Oats. Nuts. Fruit. Canola oil. Vanilla. Wildflower honey or pure cane sugar.
Hand-toasted in small batches, Udi’s is deeply crunchy and nutty, and just sweet enough. (That’s actually a problem I have with many commercial granolas; they’re billed as health food but they’re often packed with sugar and/or fake flavorings and preservatives, and they taste like you’re eating a cookie.)
It really might be the very best granola I’ve ever had. I really like the au natural version, made with just three ingredients – thick-cut rolled oats, honey and canola oil. But the cranberry variety, with dried cranberries and walnuts, is pretty great too. Udi’s is delicious as a snack or breakfast treat on its own, or sprinkled on top of your favorite Greek or regular yogurt.
